Dr. Zhang is currently serving as the Dean of the College of Agriculture at South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou, China, where he has been teaching for almost thirty years. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines, in the Genome Mapping Lab of the Division of Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biotechnology. He also continued his work with IRRI in 1995 and 1997 as a Visiting Scientist. In addition to his work with IRRI and SCAU, Dr. Zhang has authored and contributed to many papers concerning rice breeding and biotechnology published in highly accredited journals including Nature Genetics and Genome.
