Atsuhiko Shinmyo, Ph.D.

Executive Director

Dr. Shinmyo is executive director and vice-president at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) in Nara Japan. Dr. Shinmyo received his doctorate in engineering from Osaka University and has 40 years of experience in the fields of chemical engineering, fermentation science and biotechnology. He received postdoctoral training at MIT before taking a faculty position at Osaka University. In 1994, Dr. Shinmyo accepted a professorship at the Graduate School of Biological Sciences at NAIST where he developed an internationally recognized research program in plant biotechnology. In 1999, Dr. Shinmyo served as project leader for the New Sun Shine Project, “Construction of Industrial Plants” sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Economics, Trading and Industry (METI). In 2003-05, he served as president of the Japanese Society of Biotechnology. From 2002-04 he served as dean of the Graduate School of Biological Sciences at NAIST and from 2008-09, Dr. Shinmyo served as President of the Plant High Technology Institute at NAIST. Dr. Shinmyo has served on numerous committees and advisory boards including serving as director of the Japan Bio-Industry Association, vice-director of the Kinki-Bioindustry Association, academic adviser to the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and advisor to the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth. Dr. Shinmyo holds 20 issued patents and has published more than 180 scientific papers including winning the Japanese Society of Biotechnology's best paper award in 1996,1997 and 2002.
