Biswanath Mukherjee, Ph.D

Distinguished Professor, IEEE Fellow

Biswanath (Bis) Mukherjee, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Davis, where he was the Chairman of Computer Science during 1997-2000. Prof. Mukherjee was elected as the General Co-Chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Optical Society of America (OSA)’s Optical Fiber Communications Conference (OFC) in 2011, Technical Program Co-Chair of OFC in 2009, and Technical Program Chair of the IEEE INFOCOM’96 conference. He is Editor of Springer’s Optical Networks Book Series, and has served on eight journal editorial boards, most notably IEEE/ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Transactions on Networking and the IEEE Network journal. He has supervised over 50 PhDs from around the world and currently mentors 15 PhD students. Prof. Mukherjee was a co-winner of the Optical Networking Symposium Best Paper Awards at IEEE Globecom in 2007 and 2008. He also authored the graduate-level textbook, Optical WDM Networks (Springer, January 2006). An entrepreneur, Prof. Mukherjee founded Ennetix, Inc., a UC Davis spinout company that specializes in energy-efficiency software products for networks and IT equipment, and served as the company’s first CEO. Prof. Mukherjee is an expert in IT-based technology startup firms, having served a 5-year term on the Board of Directors of IPLocks, a Silicon Valley startup company, and on the Technical Advisory Board of Teknovus (now acquired by Broadcom). After receiving his B.Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, he completed his Ph.D. at the University of Washington, Seattle. He is an IEEE Fellow and has received many prestigious awards during his professional and entrepreneurial career.
